Alim, of Muslim Pakistani origin, currently lives with his gay lover Giles in London. When his domineering mother Nuru comes over from Toronto to stay with her son for a while, Alim pretends that he is just flat-sharing with Giles.
His imaginary pal, Cary Grant, who makes numerous appearances throughout the film, offers him advice and moral support. In the end, Alim's mother accepts her son's sexual orientation and Giles is included in the circle of the family, as everyone attends a big Pakistani wedding in Toronto.
